Comments:

Idle Inventory:
In most organizations there is a large amount of IT inventory, typically desktop, laptops, printers etc. that lies idle.

Cost Centre/Department Funding Model:
This is due in many cases to the funding model employed that requires each department to fund its own IT inventory directly as opposed to via an IT Service.  A consequence of this funding model is that local departmental stockpiling of perfectly good and usable desktops, laptops and printers takes place.  Meanwhile other departments in the company are buying new units to meet immediate requirements.  This is a wasteful exercise particularly so because the stockpiled units quite quickly become unusable due to memory size or processor speed limitations.

Service Based Funding Model:
The solution is a service based funding model, e.g. introduction of a PC Supply and Management Service and a competent set of collections, rework and reuse procedures.
